At Pioneer Carbon we have a diverse and experienced team based at our various office locations worldwide. Our staff include a balanced mix of environmentalists, scientists, engineers and project managers.
As a team we have substantial experience in the origination, development, supply and trading of high quality offsets in both the Voluntary & Compliance Carbon Market.
Our Management Team
Mike Mason – Founder and Chairman
Mike founded Climate Care in 1997 pre Kyoto and since then it has become a market leader in the origination, development and retail of voluntary and compliance carbon offsets, pioneering methodologies and project standards in a number of areas and supplying everyone from consumers to some of the world’s largest brands. Mike also founded Biojoule – Climate Care’s sister company developing radically new biomass technologies.
Having worked for many years in the engineering and business world, Mike moved to Oxford in 1997 to study a Master's degree with the Environmental Change Institute at Oxford University. Since then he has been dedicated to moving us all towards a low carbon world and is much sought after as a serious commentator on environmental issues. Mike continues to provide technical support and strategic direction to Climate Care and Pioneer Carbon.
Edward Hanrahan – Group Chief Operating Officer
After a career starting and developing international businesses and units in the online world, as a senior executive for brands such as BA, Microsoft, Expedia and OTC/Lastminute.com, Edward joined the team in early 2007 as Group Chief Operating Officer to bring his substantial commercial experience in developing new products and managing fast growth companies in emerging markets.
Edward’s key role is in managing and driving the organisation through the rapid growth that the voluntary carbon markets are undergoing. As well as managing Climate Care and Pioneer’s expansion in the UK and overseas, Edward is responsible for the overall performance of the two businesses and making sure both the team and our customers are happy, motivated and working together in the most effective way possible to tackle climate change.
Tom Morton – Managing Director Pioneer Carbon
Tom, formerly Managing Director of Climate Care, is now Managing Director of Pioneer Carbon, based in Kenya, with a global remit to originate and develop emission reduction projects – both voluntary market and CDM. He has been a major player in building the market for high quality, credible offsets in the UK. He is based in Nairobi, but manages a team developing Pioneer’s portfolio of emission reduction projects globally.
Tom joined Climate Care in 2000 following a Master's degree from the Environmental Change Institute at Oxford University, and has 7 years experience of developing and managing carbon reduction projects.
Asli Ozcelik
Asli joined the projects team at Pioneer Carbon after finishing the Environmental Change and Management Masters degree from the Environmental Change Institute at Oxford University in 2006. She has a background of environmental management and holds a PhD in Geological Engineering. Together with Pioneer Carbon's team in Turkey, Asli is developing emissions reductions projects in country- for the time being only in the Voluntary Market. Asli is also working voluntarily to support Turkey on its journey towards the Kyoto Protocol.
Matias Steinacker
Matias is developing emissions reductions projects - both voluntary market and CDM - for Pioneer Carbon throughout Latin America. He joined the projects team at Pioneer Carbon after finishing a Masters degree from the Environmental Change Institute at Oxford University in 2006, and combines an engineering background with professional experience in the financial sector. He has also been involved in researching renewable energy technologies for the developing world from a project financing perspective, and has worked for the UK Climate Impacts Programme.
Brian Parry - Project Development Manager
Brian has over 10 years of experience in the development and delivery of new products and services in both the B2B and B2C markets.
Based in Mauritius, Brian is responsible for carbon reduction lighting projects around the World so that the end users benefit from the use of CFLs and also gain an understanding of the impact that the use of fossil fuel is having on climate change.
One of the first of these projects is an energy efficient lighting project in Mauritius with an aim to ensure that all homes in Mauritius benefit from the use of Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFLs).
